The result has been laid bare with COVID-19—workers living paycheck to paycheck, in hazardous working conditions without protections and unable to stay connected to the labor market after a job loss. Most states have a maximum of 26 weeks although some are less. On Friday, NC Republicans at the General Assembly stated their plan to raise state unemployment benefits by $50, increasing the maximum unemployment benefit to $500 a week, Cooper announced $175 million to help people behind on rent or utility payments, Trump's $300 in extra unemployment aid: More than half of states approved including North Carolina. However the additional state benefits would only last until the end of the year. Hence the second $1,200 stimulus check, included in both bills, remains just an idea.
