Two bond wires supply the laser diode uniformly and rapidly with energy.

Osram has now boosted its expertise in semiconductor-based optical security technology by acquiring US-based VCSEL specialist, Vixar Inc.. Possible applications for VCSEL products are many and varied.

Vixar, the creator of the red laser dot, had outgrown their office space and needed to make room for its rapidly expanding operations.

The office layout presents a key fob access entryway with vestibule, large café with a full-service kitchen that boasts a beautiful custom wood slab countertop. The technology can also enable gesture recognition in gaming systems and greater situational awareness for augmented and virtual reality systems.

Vixar, a subsidiary of high-tech lighting company Osram, is showcasing its leading-edge multi-junction VCSEL technology with an impressive 60% power conversion efficiency at 940 nm at Photonics West 2020 (Booth #5547) in San Francisco from February 4 to 6.

OSRAM, based in Munich, is a leading global high-tech company with a history dating back more than 110 years. A big thanks to John Lorence, senior vice president with CBRE for bringing our team in on this project. sarah.carlson@osram-os.com Unlike Fabry-Perot laser diodes, the VCSEL’s spectral shift with temperature is four times less, making it more compatible with the filters used in 3D cameras. VCSEL combines the properties of two lighting technologies—high-power density and simple packaging of an Infrared LED (IRED) with the spectral width and speed of a laser.

OSRAM has approximately 26,400 employees worldwide as of end of fiscal 2017 (September 30) and generated revenue of more than €4.1 billion.

The VCSEL acts as a light source, illuminating the face evenly with infrared light. Osram Opto Semiconductors is the world's second largest manufacturer of optoelectronic semiconductors after Nichia. The new multi-junction VCSEL boasts a world-record 60 percent power conversion efficiency at 940 nm, significantly higher than the single-junction performance of 53 percent.
